In June 2006, I first met Mr. Song Soo-kwon during my visit to South Jeolla Province, the southwestern area of the Korean Peninsula and native to both of us. At that time, he was a professor of poetry writing at Suncheon National University, a public institution located on the southeastern corner of the province.Together, we crossed the Seomjon River to Hadong County, South Gyeongsang Province, where we visited the historic Hwagae Market, as well as nearby Buddhist temples. At parting, he gave me a few books of his poems, which immediately hooked me with his personally relatable poetic sensibilities. |
