In March 1968 when I got transferred out of Mumbai the question of education of children and the lack of proximity of a good school became an important issue. We had tried unsuccessfully alternatives like putting them with my brother s family and with my parents. So it was decided that my wife will travel to her place and admit children in Allahabad schools and wait for another posting where she can rejoin me. Now being alone I started getting food from the cement plant canteen. Whenever it was not satisfying or I thought of a change I would boil two eggs and take them with two toasts. The crumbs must have remained there because after a few months I noticed two or three rats on the dining table. I tried to get rid of them but I could not. I borrowed a cat from a friend and after a while sent it to him. But every time the cat disappeared they were soon my guests again. I was driven to the decision that these short term remedies would not do & I therefore decided and obtained a kitten for permanent residence in our house. The next school vacation when the boys arrived they were excited to see a kitten in the house. This was the beginning of pets in our house.
