The Bhagavad Geetha, meaning The Song of the Lord, is part of The Mahaabhaaratha, the great epic of India, a summary of which is given below to facilitate better understanding of the Lyrics of the Lord. Long, long ago, a king by name Shanthanu ruled over Hasthinapura, a kingdom in Northern India. He had a son called Bheeshma who was highly illustrious. After Shanthanu s wife died, he married a fisherwoman called Sathyavathi, already a woman with a son, by name Veda Vyaasa, a highly educated man and a sage too. It was Sage Parasara who fathered this son. (It was the seer Vyasa who wrote The Mahaabhaaratha epic, besides several other puranas of the Hindus.) The Bhagavad Geetha is contained in the longest epic poem, The Mahaabhaaratha. This Song of the Lord (viz. Lord Krishna) contains advice to Arjuna, one of the characters in The Mahaabhaaratha, and clarifications to certain doubts raised by him in the battle field that are relevant even today. |
