In New Versions of Aksel Sandemose I focus on texts which for the most part have been glossed over in Sandemose studies: short stories, autobiographical pieces, reviews, and articles in newspapers, magazines, etc. Preceding my analyses there are brief introductions to biographical criticism, autobiography, travel literature, and hypertextuality, but some readers may opt for heading straight for chapter 7 which is about Sandemose’s first published text.
The enumerative bibliography Aksel Sandemose og Skandinavien (1969; ‘Aksel Sandemose and Scandinavia’) comprises 1,261 texts all of which I have read; this monograph covers about 400, some of which are only mentioned briefly. The study of Sandemose’s hypotexts and hypertexts opens the door for a new description of his works and his writing strategies; furthermore there are sections on a couple of important themes and motifs. |
