Ryan Davidson's poetry has a tendency to lull readers into a rhythm of false comfort, the comfort of familiar words and images which seem to have veered somewhere in the middle, or maybe the beginning. He manipulates space on a page not to the reader's benefit, nor his own, but to that of the poem. He approaches in the guise of a friend, sharing secrets and sometimes places, only to leave in time for the reader to look back and acknowledge the teacher. "I'd learned about the sonnet / ," he writes, "but before the usefulness of form dawned / on me." We are grateful for that dawn. |
