"I've been writing my story for years: the poems, of course. Starting in 1949, thoughts, ideas, reactions, insights: an unintentional diary in rhyme and meter. You'll find some of these poems in other collections later to be books or which have become books sixteen so far. The reason thus: when I write a poem, something in my nature categorizes, getting it placed, classified - however you want to put it. Permanent-ized, eternalized, available to someone in the world drawn to it. In any case, an instinct is satisfied. Another instinct has been to date everything. Motive? I m not sure. Part of this original need to chronicle; watch myself, keep track of myself (which I certainly don t do in daily life, hardly knowing what I did or ate yesterday). Yet, it has turned out to be a superlative method for tracing development, artistic and personal: changes in style, themes, emphases, evolution in general. To be recommended: everything turning into a kind of diary, whether comment on the political climate, nature's whims or the death of a movie star. It all tells you about the total you. Invaluable. |

Arlene Corwin |
|
With some 3,000 poems behind her, Arlene Corwin has extended the thematically based book Birth, Death & In Between to Birth, Death & In Between II, the theme repeating it seems, lifelong - repeated, but never repetitive; a book speaking to the variegated worlds of thought and event which start in birth, have a life and end in death. Corwin has gone from the time when there was nothing to say to having poetic opinions, universal, far-reaching and wall-to-wall; matured and maturing in breadth and style as well as years. A musically gifted child, she studied harp, piano and voice, making music her profession, jazz her genre.
