Naipaul traveled extensively throughout the world from Argentina in the west to Malaysia in the east. He interacted with all societies from aboriginals to the most modern people in America; from Hindus to Muslims and from the most developed people in Europe to the least developed in Pakistan. At the time when writers like Evelyn Wagh were saying that there was no future for travel writing, Naipaul proved the genre did not die. He proved also that he could write the most revealing books on travel despite increase in transport, and visual media. There is something new to be given to the readers if the writer wishes. He changed the face of travel writing and gave it a new shape. His interest in travel is such that he has gone to write about Africa even at the age of seventy eight to write a book, The Mask Of Africa. Though he did not mention, he always accompanied his wife or his girl friend during travel. |
