This book is a first-time translation of Chinese poems by Yeonsan (1476-1506), a Korean king deposed after twelve years on the throne. A ruler of extreme cruelty and lewdness, he also held a deep appreciation for nature, wine, songs, and female beauty. The eighty poems presented here in both Chinese and English run the gamut of emotions--delight, trust, disappointment, sadness, depression, defiance, and anger. Yeonsan's poetry will provide the reader with a window into the psyche of a despotic, narcissistic, yet oddly delicate ruler of premodern Korea. |
