This is a humble attempt to introduce Purandarad sa's songs to outside Kanna a speaking region. Besides, it is high time to make available the songs of this great saint-poet in English translation to the new generation of Kanna igas who are diverted from their cultural heritage due to schooling in English medium. It is also necessary to mitigate damage done to Purandarad sa by some western scholars who have called his compositions folk songs. They have distorted his songs by adding extraneous matter.
Editorial Reviews
The latest book Vision of Purandaradasa by K H Prabhu leaves no doubt in our minds that the hallowed fire of Purandaradasa's vision will purify us, if we care to peruse his songs. K H Prabhu has wisely selected 326 sacred songs of the immortal saint Purandaradasa. To read this sublime book is necessarily to learn that the artless art of religious songs as we find in Purandaradasa's poetry is not a mere amusement, but a highly serious task. Purandaradasa is at his best in sacred imagery, suggestion of eternity and spiritual depth. After reading this extraordinary book, Purandaradasa deserves to be called God-gifted voice of India's matchless religious poetry. --Santosh Kumar, Editor,Cyberwit.net
An overall view of the book is suggestive of the spiritual inclination of the saint poet, his compelling songs meandering through the upheavals of a materialistic and worldly life to reach the final abode and ultimate bliss. The book Vision of Purandaradasa is an exhaustive and impressive work by poet K H Prabhu and his efforts to do justice to the saint poet and deliver his due recognition is laudable. --Supratik Sen, Kolkata, Jan 20, 2018 |
