Critical Essays

Author: Adam Donaldson Powell & Santosh Kumar Binding: Paperback (pp: 106) ISBN: 978-81-8253-110-9 Availability: In Stock (Ships within 1 to 2 days) Publisher: Cyberwit.net, Allahabad, India Pub. Date: 2008 Condition: New  Description: Much has been written regarding the history and development of literary criticism, the present "crisis" precipitated by trends and practices in the areas of publishing, marketing and distribution, as well as challenges posed for literary criticism by electronic publishing ... including a renaissance of the age-old questions regarding which persons are qualified to write literary criticism, and the purposes and goals of good literary criticism.

All of these topics, themes and discussions are actual and important today. My main concern is to provide authors of literary works (poetry, short stories, novellas, essays, novels etc.) and independent presses and facilitators of self-published books of quality with a new form of literary criticism: which is informative, which incites debate, which challenges author and reader, and which provides entertainment, but which at the same time functions as a marketing tool and an opportunity for authors to consider their own development and accomplishments from the perspective of another literature enthusiast. I review both first-time authors and authors who have written dozens of books, assess individual books as well as compare several books by the same author, and sometimes follow a specific author’s development from book to book.

All literary criticism is subjective by definition. However, it can be helpful for both author and readers of literary criticism to discover new ways of perceiving their own writing, and writing in general. I am not an English professor, or even an English major. I am an author, and yet another who constantly struggles with the same questions, choices and challenges all authors confront. It is my experience that reviewing others’ writing gives me greater insight into my own. This is (for me) an ever-going process of personal and artistic development.

Lastly, I would like to say that I consider literary criticism to be an art form in itself – a form for expression that is constantly stretching and yawning, recollecting older traditions and recognising the contemporary and the visionary in authors, and sometimes making associations between diverse forms of artistic expression and artistic disciplines. However, reading a book review or a piece of literary criticism is no substitute for reading the book, and is not a prerequisite either. Literary criticism is only a personal guide and commentary ... a short essay containing the reviewer’s thoughts and reactions to having read a work (or works) of literature by another author.

— Adam Donaldson Powell

As a reviewer I always try to promote understanding and enjoyment of literature. A literary critic should always aim at reconstructing the mind of the creative artist as manifested in his or her manuscript. The vast field of an artist’s mind is revealed only when we discover ‘wisdom of the ages’ in his work. "The past is altered by the past as much as the present is directed by the past." In my critical review of the creative artists included in Critical Essays I have kept the attitude of a careful searcher or explorer. The main concern is to search the intrinsic and unique strength of the poet or short-story writer. An immortal poet always uses language "charged with meaning to the utmost possible degree" (Ezra Pound), and his poetry is "the storehouse of recorded values" (F. R. Leavis).

LE PARADIS (PARADISE)

Author: Adam Donaldson Powell Binding: Paperback (pp: 80) ISBN: 978-81-8253-103-1 Availability: In Stock (Ships within 1 to 2 days) Publisher: Cyberwit.net, Allahabad, India Pub. Date: 2008 Condition: New  Description: Le Paradis is a 100% fictional work, touching on many issues in today’s French Polynesia: poverty, wealth, ecology, mythology and the conservation of culture and tradition (au sujet de la pauvreté, de la richesse, de l’écologie, des légendes, et de la conservation du patrimoine culturel). It is my hope that this work will evoke interest regarding both the threats and consequences of modernisation, ecological disasters and materialism for delicate small societies outside the mainstream political, economic and cultural structures propagated by the large and powerful countries of the world. Many of these "peripheral" societies are struggling to maintain their traditions and cultural specificities. I would further venture to suggest that we who live in the large agenda-setting centres of modernisation, military and economic power and globalised culture have much to learn from these small societies in the far corners of the world, and that the survival of the Earth itself may be contingent upon a willingness to learn simpler and more holistic and interpersonal approaches to life, culture and spirituality. This time I have chosen French Polynesia as the geographical/cultural entity that serves as a background for the abovementioned message; however, it could just as well have been another set of islands, or another remote society.

Rapture: endings of space and time

Author: Adam Donaldson Powell Binding: Paperback (pp: 86) ISBN: 978-81-8253-082-9 Availability: In Stock (Ships within 1 to 2 days) Publisher: Cyberwit.net, Allahabad, India Pub. Date: 2007 Condition: New  Description: At a time when it would seem that humanity now needs art and poetry more than ever, the profession of poetry has perhaps never before seemed so much of a useless occupation from an economical perspective. And yet the number of aspiring professional, amateur and “closet” poets seems to increase -- all across the world. In a rapid-paced environment where the Internet has “foreclosed” on both newspapers and long novels, and where coming to the point in a cost-effective way is the norm for all forms of communication (“time is money”), poetry has begun to regain an important status as a means of quickly conveying ideas and feelings and of providing recreation and diversion in small doses. The prevalence of storytelling as a form in today’s poetry attests to this new need for economizing literary access to both information and escape. At the same time, another new form of poetry has re-emerged in recent years: rapturous poetry, i.e. “active” poetry which is akin to free prose written in an economical style and format. Rapturous poetry is actually nothing new – even in the English language. I personally consider much of Walt Whitman’s poetry to be “rapturous” in both style and form, as in Whitman’s poem “Poets to come!” from “Leaves of Grass”.

By rapturous I mean “enticing”, “actively engaging” and “transporting”. In this day and age it can be argued that rapture is perhaps more identifiable with a contagious sense of conviction and the power of sentimental persuasion rather than overbearing romanticism, and religious or sensual ecstasy. The drive to live, to create, to experience and to convey one’s feelings, thoughts and experiences in an unfolding and captivating fashion is evident in all who wish to leave their signature upon the annals of history – if even for a brief moment in time. This is the “passion” of the 21st century. It is not necessarily an ego trip, but perhaps an attempt to both justify and verify life itself at a time when the value of human life and nonconformity are increasingly challenged.

There exists a poet in each and every one of us – oftentimes in seclusion, but nonetheless scratching and clawing for release and self-expression. It is to this end that I have written the following poems, dedicated to the poet in us all – wherever and whomever we may be.

Three Legged Waltz

Author: Adam Donaldson Powell Binding: Hardback (pp: 80) ISBN: 81-8253-058-X Availability: In Stock (Ships within 1 to 2 days) Publisher: Cyberwit.net, Allahabad, India Pub. Date: 2006 Condition: New

Description: Adam Donaldson Powell's fourth book of poetry, Three-legged Waltz, is inspired by the masterful works by composer Maurice Ravel: "Valses Nobles et Sentimentales" and "Gaspard de la Nuit". In this volume of poetry and reviews, Powell transforms the formerly "useless occupation" of the waltz into a multicultural and trilingual dance suited for modern times. With original poetry, his poetry in translation and his reviews in Spanish, English and Norwegian, Adam Powell invites the reader to dance both on the periphery and in the heart of an increasingly globalized literary world.

His partners in this three-legged waltz are three poets (María Cristina Azcona, Diane Oatley and Susan Morales Guerra) who have each written a preface in one of the book's three languages, and have otherwise contributed their literary and translation talents. On the sidelines, watching this sometimes decadent and sometimes luscious waltz is the Chilean-born writer Fernando Rodríguez who has contributed with editorial and translation assistance.

El Último Tango

Las reglas más importantes
Con respecto a la vida
Nos fueron reveladas unos momentos
Antes del amanecer en
Una de las grandes avenidas
Que siempre están en discordia
Con la logica de las cosas útiles:
El vino joven ..
El sexo promiscuo ..
Las compras compulsivas
Y quizás .. el ir a la iglesia
En un día de trabajo.
Nos reconocemos en los
Sueños vivos capturados en
Las pinturas de Goya y El Bosco.
Y allí, bailamos nuestro último tango;
Lenta ..
Y religiosamente ...
Y huimos de la memoria exacta
A la sombra de nuestras
Últimas
Indiscreciones.

Three-legged Waltz

Well hidden behind the portals
Of passionless and watery eyes
The incessant carousel of an insomnious
Three-legged waltz is revealed with
Childlike vision; hypnotically in
Syncopation with the murmur
Of the inviolate ticking clock.
In this surface-like existence, well
Beyond resistance and emotion,
Every attempt to break through is
As futile as punching a pillow
Or screaming in a dream.
And in the absence of promise we
Eventually find solace in our perpetual
State of existentialism and blues --
And pretend not to recognize the
Everpresent and bittersweet
Scent of lemons exuding from
Each and every passerby.

Edderkoppkvinne

Du, edderkoppkvinne.
Som bestandig er iblant
De best kledde i byen,
Men som aldri bruker
Penger når du er ute.
Du, edderkoppkvinne.
Så sjenert at gutter
Leter etter deg inntil
Du fanger dem.
Du, edderkoppkvinne.
Så ensom. Så lei.
Så redd for deg selv.
Du edderkoppkvinne.
Er det rart, eller ...?
